Ingredient Spotlight — GABA (PharmaGABA®) · PM Formula

The Thirty Minutes Before Sleep

The hardest part of a good night is the first part — the stretch where your body is in bed but your mind is still at the desk. A human sleep study measured how GABA affects that opening window, and how fast it gets to work.

You don't have a sleep problem so much as a shut-down problem. The lights are off, the day is technically over, and your brain keeps re-litigating it. Sleep latency — how long it takes to actually fall asleep — is the quiet tax on every one of tomorrow's decisions.

The trial

In a randomized, placebo-controlled crossover study, researchers used EEG to evaluate sleep after oral GABA, and separately tracked its blood levels over time.

What they found

  • Faster to sleep. GABA significantly shortened sleep latency.
  • More deep, restorative sleep. It increased total non-REM sleep time, and subjects noticed the difference on questionnaires.
  • It works quickly. Blood GABA peaked around 30 minutes after intake — which is why taking it 30–60 minutes before bed makes sense.

The authors noted GABA "strongly affected the early stage of sleep," consistent with its rapid absorption.

The goal isn't to knock you out. It's to shorten the distance between lights-off and actually gone.

Why it's in the PM formula

This is the study that sets the dosing logic for a nighttime formula. PharmaGABA® absorbs fast and acts on the opening window of sleep — so it belongs in an evening stack taken shortly before bed, working alongside L-theanine to quiet the shut-down.
