Ingredient Spotlight — L-Theanine

Calm and Alert Aren't Opposites

Caffeine makes you fast. It also makes you jittery. A landmark human trial asked what happens when you put L-theanine in the room with it — and the answer reframed what "focused" can feel like.

You know the version of alert that comes with a cost: the second coffee that sharpens the morning and frays the afternoon, the fast mind that's also a restless one. For years the trade felt fixed — you could be calm or you could be sharp, and productivity meant choosing sharp and paying for it. This study is where that assumption starts to come apart.

The trial

In a randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind, balanced crossover study, researchers tested four conditions in healthy adults: L-theanine (250 mg) alone, caffeine (150 mg) alone, the two combined, and a placebo — monitoring salivary caffeine to keep everyone honest. They measured cognition and mood across the board.

What they found

  • The combination was the story. L-theanine plus caffeine produced faster simple reaction time, faster numeric working-memory reaction time, improved sentence-verification accuracy, and better rapid visual information processing.
  • It changed how alertness felt. Together, the two reduced "tired" ratings and increased "alert" ratings.
  • A genuine interaction. There was a significant positive theanine×caffeine interaction on delayed word-recognition speed — the two doing something together that neither did as cleanly alone.

The researchers' takeaway was careful and precise: beverages containing L-theanine and caffeine "may have a different pharmacological profile" than caffeine alone. Not more stimulation — a different quality of it.

The point was never to remove the edge. It was to take the noise off it.

The honest caveat

We'll be straight with you, because that's the whole brand: in this study, L-theanine on its own did not improve these measures — its standout results appeared in partnership with caffeine. That's exactly why the ingredient deserves thought, not hype. Where it sits in a formula, and what it sits next to, is the difference between a nice-sounding label and a real effect.

It's the kind of nuance we'd rather show you than bury — the reason we treat formulation as a design problem, not a checklist.
