Oral Glutathione: Proven to Raise Body Stores | TNutra
Ingredient Spotlight — Glutathione (OPITAC™)
The Antioxidant Your Body Was Supposed to Make
Your body manufactures its own master antioxidant. It also makes less of it every year you're alive. For a long time, science doubted you could top it back up by swallowing it — until a six-month human trial settled the question.
The wear you can't see is the kind that matters most at your age. Not the obvious fatigue — the quieter cellular accounting underneath it: oxidative stress accumulating, the body's own defense reserve drawing down a little each year. Glutathione is that reserve. It's the antioxidant your cells lean on first, and it declines with age and load. The open question was never whether it mattered. It was whether an oral dose could actually refill the tank.
The trial
Researchers at Penn State ran a six-month, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial in 54 healthy non-smoking adults, testing oral glutathione at 250 mg or 1,000 mg per day. Crucially, they didn't just measure blood — they measured glutathione stored across multiple body compartments: red blood cells, plasma, lymphocytes, and cheek-lining cells, plus markers of oxidative stress and immune function.
What they found
- Body stores actually rose. After six months, glutathione increased roughly 30–35% in red blood cells, plasma, and lymphocytes at the high dose — the first human evidence that daily oral glutathione builds the body's stores.
- Dose- and time-dependent. Effects grew over the months and scaled with dose; levels returned to baseline after a one-month washout — a sign the supplement, not chance, was doing the work.
- Less oxidative stress, more immune readiness. The oxidized-to-reduced glutathione ratio dropped (a marker of lower oxidative stress), and natural-killer-cell activity more than doubled versus placebo at three months in the high-dose group.
The authors' conclusion was a genuine first: daily glutathione supplementation "was effective at increasing body compartment stores of GSH."
You can't stop the reserve from drawing down with age. This is evidence you can help refill it.
Why it's in the system
A cognitive optimization system that ignores oxidative stress is treating the symptom and skipping the terrain. Glutathione is the foundational antioxidant your cells run on, and this is the rare ingredient with human proof that an oral form measurably raises what's actually in your body over time. We use the glutathione form in OPITAC™ because "replenishes your reserves" should mean it — with data, over months, not marketing.
