The Millisecond Advantage
Attention isn't all-or-nothing. A dose-response trial shows it moves in degrees — and that how much L-theanine you take decides how much your brain responds.
The gap between a good decision and a great one is often a matter of milliseconds — the beat where your mind registers what actually matters and lets the noise fall away. You can't see it happening. But in a lab, it can be measured. And what the measurement reveals is a truth most supplement labels would rather you didn't think about: dose matters.
The question the researchers asked
Most studies test a single dose and call it a day. This one asked a sharper question: does more L-theanine produce more effect? In a double-blind, placebo-controlled, four-way crossover trial, researchers gave 27 healthy adults three different doses of L-theanine — 100 mg, 200 mg, and 400 mg — plus a placebo, on separate days. Then they recorded event-related potentials: the brain's electrical response as it processes and discriminates information, timed to the millisecond.
What they found
- The response scaled with the dose. At 400 mg, L-theanine significantly shortened the latency of the P3b brain-wave component — a marker of how quickly the brain allocates attention — versus placebo. The lower doses didn't reach significance.
- The relationship was linear. An exploratory analysis found that each additional 100 mg shaved roughly 4 milliseconds off that attentional response.
- Faster processing, cleanly measured. The effect showed up in the brain's timing, not just in self-report — objective neurophysiology.
The researchers' conclusion was direct: L-theanine increases attentional processing of information in a dose-dependent manner.
An underdosed ingredient isn't a gentler version of the science. It's a different result.
Why this changes how you should read a label
The supplement aisle is full of "clinically studied" ingredients present at a fraction of the studied amount — a name on the label doing the work the dose should be doing. This trial is the clearest kind of argument against that: the benefit tracked the dose, in a straight line. Below a real amount, the effect thinned out.
It's why we care as much about how much of an active is in the formula as which active it is. The molecule earns its place in the research at a meaningful dose — so that's the standard we hold ourselves to.
